The universe expands. The population on earth increases. We invest with dreams of bull markets. Our children are born with aspirations of greater physical heights. We build. Our communities seek larger capacity. We age. We stretch borders. We act as if there are no limits.
But we know better. Biology has boundaries. Pride befalls the tallest trees.
And yet –
life blooms
days permit us to improve
and the infinite is.
Have you ever wondered how we find ourselves in such circumstances? History lies behind. The future unfurls ahead. Each of us stands on the precipice of the present. Words ebb from the empty gaps in our understanding. And the tide of time breathes in and then out. We balance on tip-toes, peering forward, sensing what was once behind.
I have known moments of perfection. Greedy, I try to extend them, as if this, this sacred now, were somehow like the sweetest of taffies, extensible, malleable, definable. It is not. The present lives in the ethereal. Imagination empowers us to grasp, only to miss, and then to grasp for again.
We are lucky to be here. Some (and I am one) experience the magical fortune of love, family, purpose, and good health. Not all are so blessed. Still, we are all, in some way, touched by the sacred.
You earn your place in the afterlife. So true, is it not, how we might reap what we sow, how we may receive in equal share for what we give, how we may find what we dare to seek? Hopeful, I remind myself, on nightly bended knee, to be grateful for the chance to learn, to love – and to grow.
Space is not the final frontier. Such an honor is reserved for the opportunity to be better.
